SPEAKER 1
Friends, welcome back to Capitol Hill. It is a gorgeous Sunday evening. And if you don't know me much, then you have no way of knowing that I am admittedly an unhealthy sports fan, particularly of all Denver professional teams. And tonight, tonight is game seven of the Denver Nuggets versus the Minnesota Timberwolves.

And so depending on how that game goes, you may simply never hear from me again. But assuming you will. I was thinking about what has to happen for the Nuggets to have their way tonight. And defense, defense is going to be critical. And I'm the political sicko, of course.

So I started thinking about where is defense in our politics? And it's all over. But starting at a civics level, let's start with the basics, right? That you have been told from womb to tomb that we live in a system of checks and balances. Not if you're with me.

Welcome to Defense Week!

Checks and Balances: what are they and who has them?

One of the first things we’re taught about our government is that we live in a system of checks and balances. It’s true; we do. And it’s genius.

But, are we sure that we know exactly what those checks and balances are? What are the actual mechanisms that keep any one person, branch, or level of government from gaining too much power? That’s what this week is all about.

So this week—Defense Week—devotes a day to breaking down the checks and balances within each of our three branches of government. To get your mind right, here’s the schedule.

  • Tuesday: Legislative Branch

  • Wednesday: Executive Branch

  • Thursday: Judicial Branch

By Friday, our civics defense will be on point for all of us. And defense wins championships.
